HISTORY OF ALL SAINTS UNITED CHURCH
Bishop Robert Gray of Cape Town applied for a site for an Anglican church in Somerset East and this application was approved in 1849.
His wife, Sophy Gray, designed the building and after completion it was consecrated in 1855. The hall next to the church was completed in 1856.
The chancel and vestry were added in 1881 and the bell installed in 1883. It is a small church with beautiful stained-glass windows and many memorials to members of the church who died in Wars in the 18th and 19th Century.
In 1992 the three denominations, namely Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian amalgamated to form the All Saints United Church of Somerset East. The Anglican church building was chosen to conduct future services.
A Board of Trustees was formed, comprising of representatives of all three denominations, to oversee the management of funds and maintenance of buildings. An united constitution was accepted and stipulated that ministers of each denomination would alternate and serve for a period of twelve years.
The present minister is Reverend Doctor Strauss Joubert of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in South Africa.
